Question 1: My wudu breaks easily within a minute or sometimes seconds after wudu. Many times even while doing wudu,so I start over and at times I’m starting over like 5-6 times.Wudu breaks with simple things like sitting on a sofa or especially when I sit down to go in sujood and tashahhud. I don’t have any medical issues of flatulence. Please advise how long I can go on with one wudu if it breaks so often. If I do wudu for duhr prayer, can I also read Quran after the salah even if my wudu breaks? Please help, last Ramadan odd nights I have spent so much time in the night in the bathroom repeating wudu. Please help, I don’t want to feel guilty praying or reading Quran with a broken wudu. |
Dear Sister,
Remember that your Wudu will only be deemed to be broken if you are absolutely certain that your Wudu is broken [Ibn `Abidin, “Radd al-Muhtar,” and Ibn Nujaym, “Al-Ashbah”].Having a doubt that one’s wudu is broken does not cause one’s Wudu to break. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his Household and grant them peace) has said, “If any of you feels something in his stomach such that it is unclear to him, whether something has come out or not, then he should certainly not leave the mosque, unless he hears a sound or smells an odour.” If you are unable to control the gas and it is indeed excessive, you may monitor your condition for the duration of one Salah time. If you are unable to maintain your Wudu for the length of time in which you are able to make your Wudu and complete your Salah during the entire Salah time, then you would be regarded as ma’dhur (excused) in the Shariah and one Wudu for each Salah time will suffice you. Once this is established, you will remain a ma’dhur until an entire Salah time passes during which you do not pass wind. As long as one is deemed a Shari Ma’zoor, one could pray as many Salahs, Fardh or Nafl during that Salah time with a single Wudu and the passing of wind (in your case) will not cause one’s Wudu to break. However, if the Wudu breaks due to some other reason, e.g. passing urine, stool etc, then the Wudu will be deemed to have broken. The Wudu of a Shari Ma’zoor will become invalid once the Salah time exits. I pray that Allah assist you and cure you of this difficulty. And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best |
Question 2: I have the mirena IUD so I get very infrequent random spotting. Not even enough to use a pantiliner…how does this affect my prayer/fasting? I have often felt confused so I will continue to pray/fast but I’m not sure this is the right thing to do. I do refrain from intercourse with my husband when I see this but I’m not sure if it’s enough to stop me from fasting and prayer since the bleeding is so minimal. |
Dear Sister, Bleeding and spotting due to a contraceptive like an IUD can be considered menstruation if it comes at the time of one’s habit, or if it comes after 15 days of purity from the last bleeding. We would not be able to determine if the bleeding you experienced is menstruation without having the exact dates of at least 3 previous menstrual cycles. If the bleeding or spotting exceeds 240 hours, or if it is followed by an incomplete purity, we will need to assign specific days that would be considered your menstruation, and the days that would be considered your purity. Also, this is a great resource for additional information and/or questions: http://whitethread.org/menstrualmatters/ask-a-question/ |
Question 3: How can I find out current resale market value of gold? Is there any online trusted website I can use? How do I calculate my Zakat from my jewelry? |
Dear Sister, This is a good website for your zakat calculations: https://www.kitco.com/. Also, we welcome you to attend this upcoming event focused on Zakat: https://www.sacredlearning.org/zakat-2021-register/ |
Question 4: Do I have to break my fast if I get my period an hour before iftar? Could you give some information on what I should do if I get my period while fasting? |
Dear Sister,
A woman must break the fast if her menstrual cycle began after she started fasting as to indicate a physical ending of the fast. She will have to make up that particular day (qadha) after Ramadan. [Maraqi al-Falah; Hindiyya] And Allah SWT knows best, Abir |
Question 5: How do we calculate zakath on our money? Is all our money zakathable or does it have to be in the bank for a year? Also what if the money is already pledged to pay off a loan? |

Question 6: For two years I didn’t pray at all. I have ben making up dhuhr, isha, and maghrib but dont know what to do about Fajr. Do i have to make up the two rakats before Fajr and for how long should I make up these prayers? I dont know exactly how long I did not pray for.
Also, what about my fasts during those times. I didnt pray so would my fasts be invalid? Would anything else be invalid? What should i do about it? |
Dear Sister,
MashAllah, it is amazing and highly commendable that you’re on a path to making up your missed prayers. Making up missed prayers during the month of Ramadan is one of the best times to do so. One can ask for multiple rewards in this blessed month. The position of all four schools of Sunni law is that it is obligatory (fard) to make up all missed prayers, regardless of why they were missed. And prayer is the first thing we will be questioned about on the Day of Judgement, as the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) informed us. And Allah Knows Best. |
